Welcome to the official 2009 class blog of SEED 415, Social Science Special Methods. This blog is the place to record your reflections on the class and to exchange ideas on making social studies classes what they should be--the most interesting, most exciting, most important classes your students will take.To get us off to a good start, please share here one of things you remember best/enjoyed most in any of your high school or college history classes. Anything that particularly helped lead you to choosing history/social studies as a major?

I had two different history teachers in high school. One was good. One was not as good. It made me appreciate the good teacher. I also liked how he emphasized that history was not a far removed subject from our own lives. Everything that happened in history can be studied and through that study we can find out who we are and where we come from. The best thing about history is the detail you can look into it. I wanted to be involved with a career that I thought was interesting and that can be looked at endlessly.

I remember my 6th grade teacher was able to make social studies seem like the most interesting stuff around. Shockingly very few teachers after him were able to repeat this feat(until I came to NSU of course).
ReplyDeleteSince I had that seed planted in me so long ago, that is why I chose to teach social studies. That and the fact that I've tried a bunch of other directions first and none of them took.

The thing that I have most enjoyed about my high school and college history classes, is the teachers who have taught the courses. I have been lucky enough to have exceptionally good teachers in every single one of my history and social science classes. They have made history exciting for me. I think this is the reason I am drawn towards this particular subject and field.

For me history has always been my favorite subject, and remembering, names, dates, facts, and figures, came very easy to me. But the biggest factor in my understanding and appreciation for history were the great people that taught and made the subject come to life. From my middle school and all the way through today I have never met a more intelligent or interesting group of people, than those who taught social science classes. These classes unlike any other help people prepare for the real world. If you understand the human experience one can have a better ability to cope with day to day life. I never left a math, science, or english class feeling that I had better understanding of people and life in general.

Unfortunately, when I was in high school, most (if not all) of my history classes were dull spirited at best. What DID attract me to history in general was the history channel. I knew I wanted to teach, and knowing how much I enjoyed history, I put the two together.
ReplyDeleteNow seeing all of the teachers who 'worksheeted' me through four years of high school, I felt that I should do a better job of it when given the chance. This, of course, is after I went to Northern and took classes with Grettler, Dias, and Marmorstein.
