Molder of Dreams

How did you like the Guy Doud video? What did you think particularly useful in his advice/comments on teaching? What about his teaching makes him an appropriate "teacher of the year?"

  1. I liked it, it was more emotional that I expected it to be. I liked that it never showed him "teaching" but instead focused on the importance of the teacher student relationship.

I think he makes an appropriate "teacher of the year" because he is a great example of what a teacher can be. Not just an instructor of rules & facts, but also someone who instills confidence in their students that they can do anything.

A molder of dreams if you will.

    **off subject, but somewhat related**
The night before we watched this film, I watched "Half Nelson" at home. That film presented this same general idea in a totally different/darker way.

**Another off subject but related item**
As we were leaving Central on Tuesday, NPR was airing a story on training teachers, they also ran another one the following day. If you missed them here they are:

  2. I actually really liked the video "Molder of Dreams." I can definitely see why he was selected as National Teacher of the Year. The thing about him and the video that stood out most to me was how Mr. Doud understood that there was more to life than the lessons he was teaching in school. He realized that high school kids are often going through a lot more than meets the eye. I think as an educator it is extremely important to be like this. This will help you to relate to the children more, which will make them more willing to want to work hard in your class. It seemed as though Mr. Doud genuinely cared about what was going on in his students' life both inside and outside of the classroom. I found that really inspiring.

  3. "Molder of Dreams" was an excellent instructional video filled with applicable scenarios, comedy, and some fairly emotional moments. *I'll be honest, i cried when the kid was rolled across the stage...*
Doud made excellent points concerning how very alike we are to our students. His mention of his obesity, poor background, and low self esteem are what our students are facing today. The idea that school has taught them all of these things is sad but realistic. I look forward to helping build up students self esteem, not break them down further because of a poor assignment or a lack of judgment.

  4. John--

Thanks for the links. Interesting stuff--especially some of the commments.

    Amber--

Molder of Dreams brings me to tears in places too... though it's actually the very last line that gets to me (and the hug scene earlier).

I agree that it is important to build up our students rather than tear them down, but it's important do this by helping them to solid achievements that they have a right to take some satisfaction in. It's no good to make students feel good about half-baked efforts, and (unfortunately) some of the self-esteem movement tended to move in that direction.

  5. I really liked the ideas presented by Guy, he was so genuine and loved teaching, but not only that he loves his students. He understands what it is like to be an outcast, and he understands how small acts of kindness and caring can change a childs life because it happened to him. He remembers those teachers that changed his life and how much they meant to him, and he wants to be there for every student. He is teacher of the year because he brings passion and caring to his classroom, he doesn't just want to stand in the front of the room and lecture. He wants to be a part of the school and part of kids lives, and he really believes in what he does. This love he has extends to everything he does and he cares as much about each child as their parents do, or should, and thats why he is teacher of the year.

  6. I enjoyed the movie and I agree with the other students about the reasons behind him becoming teacher of the year. I think that many times like Art wrote in the text book teachers will have favorites and usually those favorites reflect the student that they were in high school. I like that Guy is able to see the best qualities in all his students and move on to become what those students need him to be, not what he think they need.

John mentioned Half Nelson. I watched Half Nelson as well and enjoyed how the movie showed the significance that a teacher can make on the lives of students, even though he was not close to perfect. I also listened to the NPR broadcast and found that extremely interesting. Their was also a broadcast of the current teacher of the year in technology and it expressed a lot of the material that we covered in our lecture with the librarian. It is good to see that people are actually putting into practice the things that we are learning about. It gives us more of a sense that the material we are learning is and will be relevant in our teaching future.
